Psyllium is an agricultural crop grown mainly in India. The most important Psyllium product is the 'Psyllium husk.' Psyllium husk or hull is processed from the outer coat of the seed of a plant known as plantago ovata. The seed is more commonly known as 'Isabgol' or 'Isabghula' in India

APPLICATIONS / USAGES: (Properties, Action, Applications):
Main use of Psyllium is in pharmaceutical formulations as a lubricating laxative, considered useful in the treatment of intestinal tract problems like constipation and other minor disorders. Psyllium husk and seeds can be consumed directly while Psyllium in powder form is used as an ingredient in the manufacture of various medicinal applications like effervescent and fibre foods. Psyllium has traditionally also been a major component of Indian medicinal herbs used in Ayurvedic and Allopathic preparations. Psyllium is used for pharma preparations for lowering of cholesterol.
Psyllium is an excellent source of soluble fibre. It contains more than eight times of the soluble fibre found in oat bran. The mucilaginous form of Psyllium (when
Psyllium is placed in water) slows down or may even prevent various complications associated with gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These problems may vary from constipation and diarrhea to diverticulosis and colon cancer.
As a soluble fibre, Psyllium has become an interesting product.
Psyllium Husk is a versatile product, which finds application for varied purposes due to its following properties:

Easily produces gel by absorbing water
Swelling index is about 20 times in volume
 Totally free from toxicity
Chemically inert, acts mechanically in alimentary canal

OTHER APPLICATIONS & USES:
Western countries are the major users of Psyllium since the fibre content in their diet is usually very low. This also explains consumption in countries like Pakistan, where food of animal origin is preferred over vegetarian food. In contrast, Indians consume a lot of vegetables or natural fibres in their daily diet; hence there is a lesser need for a laxative like Psyllium. But of late, in Indian Metros in particular, food habits are changing. Hence domestic consumption of Psyllium is expected to rise significantly in the future, thus opening up a significant domestic market for the product.

New applications of Psyllium are in ice-creams, jam, bread, biscuits, rice cakes etc. as it improves softness and texture and works as binder and stabilizer. At present, Psyllium is not used so extensively in these products. However, after the US FDA approval for the usage of Psyllium in food products in February 1998, Kellogg's (a leading international food giant) has started using Psyllium in their breakfast cereals in USA.
